EAW-Super 8176E Undine2

repair & restoration of an old tube radio

The project starts in a convivial round with discussions about music, sound and finally about old tube radios. My friends and I agreed that everyone should own an old tube radio. Since I already had two of them, I made them the offer to restore one as soon I got one again. And as life goes on, an old radio collector in our hometown dissolved part of his collection during the same period, so that I got four old radios cheaply. Two of them was model EAW-Super 8176E Undine2, but both with defects and some unknown problems. So I set out to get at least one device to work.

One of the Radios was running but on all channels was UKW (ultra-short wave), the other was without signal, so I start with the radio with signal.

The first look was better as expected, because the construction year was 1956. The only problems the radio has had was that the Piezo Tweeter was defect, on all channels was UKW, the magic eye was a line with no reaction and very weak to see and some of the electrolytic capacitors was torn open.

So I starts with cleaning and troubleshooting for the main issue (UKW on all channels)

The issue was found fast and explain the good state of the radio. The FM (UKW) switch was broken and repaired by someone in the past with soldering bridges. Since I couldn't repair the switch either, because I was missing the parts for it, I installed the switch from the 2 radio. The state of the second Radio was clearly worse.

Afterwards the radio was running on all channels "long wave, middle wave, short wave and ultra short wave". Now the main functions was given back. Therefore I starts with changing all paper and tar capacitors.

After change of all critical capacitors I made a function check of the device and all looks fine again.

Therefore I start the troubleshooting for the magic eye.

Thirst thing I do was to replace with a new one, because the used up fluorescent layer of the old one.

But it does not solve the issue with the function of the magic eye, only a line was visible. At the end the reason was an high resistance. I replace the defect resitor and the magic was back in the device.

Now I replaced the defect piezo speaker with a good one from the other radio and all functions was given back to the radio. And I also change all the tubes preventiv with unused once. Afterwards I start to refurbish the chassis, clean the speaker fabric under the shower and polish all brass parts.

The last thing I was doing and the reason why everyone should have an old tube radio is ....

I installed Bluetooth on the tape/phono input channel :-)

That's nice!

The only Problem I have now, was ... This Radio was not for me, it was promised to my friends.

That's why I'm going to visit her more often now ;-)
